What Is A “Need”?

A pessary is a flexible device, usually made of silicone, that is placed in the uterus to support pelvic organs that have dropped into the uterine space (prolapsed). These organs include the urethra, bladder, uterus, and rectum.

What Does A Pessary Do For You?

Non-invasive method
Careful treatment
It helps people live a better life without surgery
When it fits right, you won’t be able to feel the pessary.
It is easy to take out and put back in, and you can do it yourself or with the help of a trained pelvic physiotherapist or obstetrician.

How Does The Process Of Getting A Pessary Work?

Different kinds and sizes of pessaries help keep the organs in the pelvic area where they belong. Some pessaries can only be worn when you are active and must be taken out daily. Others can be left in for a long time and changed by a health care worker. The pessary works like a bra for the pelvic floor because it gives support.

The process starts with an initial evaluation, during which your trainer will ensure you have the fitting pessary. Your doctor may have told you to get a pessary fitted. If not, you can ask to be evaluated for a pessary independently. Still, the pelvic physiotherapist will need permission from your doctor before getting and putting the pessary in. If required, you will receive a letter from your MD at your first visit.

Finding a pessary that helps without hurting might take a few tries. If necessary, you will be shown how to clean and remove the mask. Then, your fixed pessary will be ordered and put in at your next appointment. After using your pessary for 2–4 weeks, you will be asked to return for a follow-up check.

Pessary Care

Mild soap is used to clean the pessary. You don’t have to clean your pessary between uses. Pessaries are made of good silicone and usually last between two and three years if taken care of well. They may change color over time but only need to be replaced if the surface cracks.
