What is Bakers Cyst?

A Baker’s cyst, also known as a popliteal cyst, is a fluid-filled swelling that forms at the back of the knee joint. It develops when synovial fluid, which normally lubricates the knee joint, accumulates in a small sac called the bursa located behind the knee. This can lead to the formation of a visible lump or bulge, causing discomfort, pain, and stiffness in the affected knee.

Baker’s cysts often result from underlying knee conditions such as arthritis, meniscus tears, or inflammation. The cyst can vary in size and may become more noticeable when the knee is bent or flexed. While the cyst itself is usually benign, it can cause discomfort and limit knee movement.

Treatment involves addressing the underlying cause and managing symptoms, which may include rest, pain relievers, physical therapy, and in some cases, aspiration (fluid removal) or surgical intervention.
